Why did you join Jij?In my second year of my PhD program, I started thinking about my future career because my research interests were different from my supervisor's. I realized that staying in academia might not be the best option for me because it's very competitive and unstable. So, I wasn't sure if I should quit my program right away or wait until I finished my PhD.Simultaneously, I had to fulfill some course requirements for my PhD program, prompting me to delve into the realms of quantum information and programming for quantum computing. I was particularly drawn to these subjects due to their intriguing nature, especially considering the expanding quantum technology industry.I heard that there were a lot of opportunities in Japan for quantum technology, so I started looking for jobs online. Luckily, I found Jij, a company working on mathematical optimization and developing classical and quantum algorithms. I applied for an internship to see if it was a good fit for me. After the internship, I really liked the project I worked on and the environment at Jij, where employees have a lot of freedom. So, I made the decision to leave my PhD program and join Jij right away.The task you are in charge ofI am currently leading a project focused on integrating machine learning into the resolution of optimization problems. The most fulfilling aspect of our project is the significant improvement it brings to the performance of solving optimization problems, ultimately delivering tangible benefits to our clients. Furthermore, the integration of "machine learning" technology into our optimization problem-solving endeavors holds profound significance. Considering the widespread application of machine learning across diverse domains and its substantial societal impact, harnessing its capabilities for optimization solutions represents a meaningful advancement.What is your motivation?I want to take on more challenging projects in the future, especially since I'm relatively new to the field of solving optimization problems. While I've made progress, I still rely on the guidance and support of my colleagues. By leading a project, I aim to deepen my understanding of optimization techniques and gain hands-on experience in applying them to real-world problems. This will not only help me grow professionally but also contribute positively to our team's success.
